It’s almost springtime in Nebraska… And almost time for open water fishing to really take off!
I have been doing an awesome job of neglecting my Master’s Thesis; and a moderate job of filling my fly boxes.
At least my popper boxes are full…
Last year I landed my first fish of open water season on March 11th at Holmes Lake… So the anticipation is killing me. Hopefully I can get on the water this weekend; because it is almost time…
The first fish of 2012… A nice little crappie taken on a bead head reaper!

We’ve been eyeballing fly rods and reels. Sunday was the last day for sport fish for us, but all the lakes still have about a foot of ice on them. I got a while to wait yet
Our lakes are in flux… But slowing the ice is coming off. I am just waiting for the water temps to creep up just a little bit. I think the crappie will start moving pre span positions if the water gets to about 40-45 degrees… Just inside of range of my bead head reapers!
I just bought two new fly rods this winter, so I am already in the dog house on that front!
The Gander Mountain here in Madison just had a huge fishing sale. Matt’s got free reign with that sort of thing, and he definitely ran with it. We saw some basic fly rod/reel combos for around $40. Early trout came into season here on Sunday. Moving water is most likely open. We’re hoping to hit up a Class A trout stream nearby soon, as well as try out the Root River near Racine. My duck hunting waders will get new life if we stick with fly fishing.
My first fly fishing outfit was an 8wt combo from Cabelas. It has since been put on “reserve” for when I am teaching my friends/family how to fly cast; but it is a great rod that inspired my love of the sport!
Here in eastern Nebraska, our moving water is too warm to support trout… It is a 4-5 hour drive to nearest trout stream… Our impoundments might open sooner down here, but I would love to have a trout stream near by!
Good luck!
I know how you feel! I cant wait to fish again! I have been tying flies all winter. Im moving in 2 weeks to Toronto were i will be able to fish 365 days a year! Chinook, coho, stealhead, rainbow, brown, bookiesand all warm water fish. Its insane! And all around the city!
That is awesome! I hope you take lots of photos, I’d love to see them!
Oh I will be out here a lot so I will
there will be tons of it!
For all of us, fishing withdrawal is about to be cured!
And it can come soon enough!!!
