I got out on the ice one more time this weekend. That was probably my last trip of ice season…
While on the ice, I took a video of catching a bluegill for Little E. I got on a hot hole and was catching bluegill pretty reliably. The video wasn’t too tough to make.
I know a lot of people who read my blog are not fishermen themselves… (it’s probably about 50/50)… So this is for you too…
There is nothing like feeling the tap on the end of your line; or in this case, watching a bobber come alive. Then feeling the anticipation build as you wait for the perfect moment to set the hook… And the excitement when that hook strikes home and the fight is on…
This is what drives me to sit in freezing weather on a sheet of ice… to drive all the way across the state to a trout stream… to stand in my backyard practicing my cast and presentation for hours… to wade into waist deep swampy, weedy bass water in the heat of summer…
That moment is what makes it all worth while.

Hey!
I’ve added your blog to my blog list over at http://fredrikloveus.blogspot.se/ (years on the fly)
I really enjoy your style of fishing and you beeing a bit innovative with your fly tying.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the add!
I keep trying to find new and fun ways to catch fish… if there was a way to fly fish through the ice, I would be doing that too!
My dad was a bobber/bluegill fisherman. We ate a lot of bluegill. I always wondered why he fished for such a small fish. They seemed so much work to clean, and you had to have a lot of fish to feed a family of seven. Maybe they were just easy to catch, or maybe he simply liked the mildness of the fish. I never asked him, and he’s gone now. Any thoughts?
Big bluegill are a challange, just like any other fish…
But small and medium size bluegills are not too hard to catch. What they lack in difficulty, they make up for in quanity. Bluegills reproduce very quickly, so their populations can stand some heavy harvest without harming the population.
I don’t normally keep fish, but if I did, I would keep bluegill. Some people think they taste better; but I like knowing that I won’t harm the resource by doing so…
Oh, and they are a ton of fun to catch…
It was probably the later…
